In one of the most bizarre cricketing incidents of 2021, Hobert Hurricanes suffered a penalty of five runs n their Big Bash League (BBL) clash with Melbourne Stars on Friday. In the match at the Bellerive Oval in Hobert, a deliberate short-run by Hurrcanes’ batter Tim David led to the penalty runs being added to the team’s total.

The incident took place in the final over of the home team’s batting innings. David was spotted turning way for a second run despite being far away from the crease and completing the run.

Television cameras on the ground immediately spotted the deliberate effort of Tim David and the umpires hit the team with a five-run penalty in accordance with the rules. The incident left cricket fans stunned and the clip immediately went viral on social media.

Talking about the match, after choosing to bat first on winning the toss, the Hurricanes manage to post a huge score of 180/6 on the board. A solid knock of 67 in just 43 balls from opening batter Ben McDermott led their change. With a quick-fire knock of 22 in 12 balls, Tim David helped the Hurricanes to get a strong finish despite Andre Russell taking three wickets.

In reply, the Stars could put 156/9 in 20 overs as the Glenn Maxwell-led unit suffered a 24-run defeat. Apart from a fiery 40-ball 52 from Joe Clark, nobody in the visiting team’s batting order managed to make a score above 30. Both Riley Meredith and Tom Rodgers chipped in with three wickets each while Nathan Elis took two scalps.

As a result of the match, Hurricanes have climbed up to the third spot on the table with 10 points in five matches they have platey so far. Meanwhile, with seven points after five games, the Stars’ have slipped to seventh place in the table. Both teams still have nine games left in the season.
