Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has been fined 25% of his match fees following a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during Sunday’s clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. The penalty was imposed after David failed to comply with on-field umpires’ instructions on two separate occasions, raising questions around player discipline in IPL 2026.

The incident first occurred in the 18th over of RCB’s innings when David smashed a six off Hardik Pandya. With the ball getting wet, the Mumbai Indians requested a replacement, a rule permitted under current IPL regulations. As per protocol, the umpires are responsible for selecting a similarly used ball from the available set.

However, Tim David appeared dissatisfied with the replacement. He repeatedly examined the ball and delayed handing it back to the umpires despite being instructed to do so. The situation escalated as umpires Virender Sharma and Swaroopanand Kannur were seen visibly frustrated, even pointing fingers during the exchange. The moment quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from fans and experts alike.

According to an official IPL statement, Tim David breached Article 2.4, which relates to “disobeying an umpire’s instruction during a match.” The statement clarified that the first offence occurred in the 18th over, and a similar incident occurred in the final over, when David again failed to return the ball promptly.

Despite the controversy, Tim David played a crucial role in RCB’s innings, finishing unbeaten on 34 off just 16 balls. His late cameo helped push RCB to a formidable total of 240/4 in 20 overs. Notably, the team maintained a high scoring rate both before and after the ball change, indicating minimal impact on their momentum.

Mumbai Indians, in response, fell short by 18 runs, but the spotlight remained firmly on David’s actions, highlighting the importance of adhering to on-field protocols in high-pressure matches.
