Tim David found himself at the centre of an unusual on-field moment during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, with umpires stepping in to issue a warning after his playful actions with the ball caught attention. The incident unfolded in the 18th over of RCB’s innings. After launching Hardik Pandya for a towering six over deep mid-wicket, the ball was deemed too wet for use, prompting the umpires to call for a replacement.

As per protocol, a selection of balls was brought out, and one was chosen for continuation. However, what followed added a light yet controversial twist. David briefly took hold of the new ball and began examining it casually—mimicking the routine typically followed by bowlers.
Even as on-field umpire Swaroopanand Kannur requested the ball back, David appeared to continue inspecting it, prompting a stern intervention from the officiating team. Umpire Virender Sharma eventually issued a clear warning, bringing the situation under control. While the moment drew laughter on commentary—famously summed up by Dale Steyn saying, “Everyone is a bowler now”—it also raised questions around IPL playing conditions.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra pointed out on air that batters are not permitted to handle or assess the ball during a change, hinting that the act could fall under time-wasting provisions in the IPL Code of Conduct.
Although no official action has been confirmed, David’s actions could potentially be reviewed under Article 2.10.7, which addresses delays caused by players during match play.

Interestingly, the ball change appeared to work in Mumbai’s favour in the immediate phase, with David unable to find the boundary in the remainder of the over. However, he bounced back strongly, taking on Jasprit Bumrah in the next over with a boundary and a six, before finishing the innings with another maximum off Trent Boult.

David remained unbeaten on a quickfire 34 off 16 balls, playing a crucial role in RCB’s imposing total of 240/6—now their highest-ever score at Wankhede. Earlier, Phil Salt (78) and Virat Kohli (50) laid the foundation with a 120-run opening stand, while skipper Rajat Patidar added a blistering 53 to cap off a dominant batting display.
