Australia’s remarkable victory in the Edgbaston Test against England left former captain Tim Paine reminiscing about their redemption. The match posed a challenging target of 174 runs for Australia on the final day, but rain delays reduced their playing time to just 67 overs. Despite consistent wicket losses, Usman Khawaja stood out as the sole batsman to reach the half-century mark.

When Khawaja departed, Australia still trailed by 72 runs, and Paine admitted he contemplated going to sleep, unwilling to witness an English triumph. However, an impressive 55-run partnership between Pat Cummins (44*) and Nathan Lyon (16*) guided Australia to a thrilling win.

Tim Paine shared his elation during an interaction on the SEN podcast ‘Whateley’, as he revealed, ” certainly did. I actually spoke to Pat Cummins on text yesterday and actually said we have got one back for us – it was nice. Sitting on my couch at 4 AM in the morning, I must admit when Alex Carey got out and Nathan Lyon strolled to the crease, I contemplated going to bed because I didn’t want to have to watch an English win.”

Ben Stokes’ analysis in the post-match press conference resonated with Paine, as he acknowledged the critical junctures that influenced the outcome. Stokes’ dropped catch of Lyon and Cummins’ two superb sixes off Joe Root in the 83rd over were pivotal moments on the final day.

Tim Paine also emphasized, “I think Ben Stokes sort of nailed it in his press conference. It’s like these small margins but a game that goes for five days, it’s often looked at in just that last hour from people outside and the media.”

Looking ahead, Paine expressed his belief that Australia, led by Cummins and the team, will continue to improve as the series progresses. With both teams evenly matched, Paine acknowledged the significance of capitalizing on pivotal moments early in the game. As the series unfolds, he expects Australia to strengthen its performance and further challenge England.
