Former Australian skipper, Tom Moody has opined that Team India needs to consider the theory of split-captaincy. At the present point in time, Virat Kohli has been managing the captaincy role of the Indian team across the three formats. Captaincy hasn’t taken a toll on his batting as he is currently the only batsman to maintain a phenomenal average of more than 50 in all three formats of international cricket.

However, with him approaching 32, pundits feel that Kohli should consider giving up captaincy in atleast one format. Talking about the tactic, during a chat with Cricbuzz, Moody said, “On the [split] captaincy, it really depends. Like for England, Eoin Morgan is not a Test player, he has been, but he is not recognized as a Test player, he is a specialist white-ball cricketer. So, it works for them pretty easily, it’s a natural transition.”

About India, Moody feels split-captaincy is a good option as it will also help in Kohli’s longevity at the highest level. The veteran fears that if Virat continues being India’s captain in all three formats, he has to retire early from international cricket.

Moody explained, “With India’s example, which is probably the most high-profile example, the only reason I would prefer split captaincy there is purely to preserve the longevity of Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli is a superstar, we all know that. And he is an absolute delight to watch, to compete, as a captain and as a batsman.”

He further added, “It’s a completely different pressure. And I would be concerned that if Kohli maintains all the three captaincy roles, are we loosing two-three years of international cricket from one of the game’s greatest-ever players?”

Kohli is currently India’s most successful captain in Test cricket as he surpassed MS Dhoni’s tally in the West Indies tour last year. Virat has also won more bilateral series, though he is yet to win an ICC event, India is also leading the charts in the ICC World Test championship.
