Australia’s T20I vice-captain Travis Head has admitted that the team simply wasn’t good enough during their disappointing campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The early exit marked a rare setback for the Australian cricket team, who were knocked out in the group stage for the first time in the tournament’s multi-format era despite entering the competition with high expectations.

Australia’s campaign never really found momentum. The former champions managed just two wins in the group stage, defeating the Ireland national cricket team and the Oman national cricket team, but crucial defeats to the Sri Lanka national cricket team and the Zimbabwe national cricket team ultimately ended their hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Reflecting on the campaign, Head acknowledged that the team failed to meet its usual standards but insisted that criticism often becomes exaggerated whenever Australia fall short in global tournaments.

“I think there are a lot of people who draw long bows when Australian cricket teams don’t win. There needs to be a reason. People want a reason. Sometimes there is, and sometimes it’s a bit harder to explain than that,” Travis Head said while speaking to reporters ahead of the domestic season.
The aggressive opener made it clear that the squad remains fully committed to the T20 format and is determined to bounce back quickly after the setback.

“We weren’t good enough, so everyone can draw their own conclusions, but we know as a team that we’re fully committed, and they come around pretty quickly,” he added.
Following Australia’s early exit from the World Cup, Head has shifted his focus back to domestic cricket and will represent the South Australia cricket team in the Sheffield Shield. The tournament offers players an opportunity to regain form and build momentum ahead of a busy international calendar.

Head also revealed that Australia’s long-term planning never stops. Just as the team meticulously prepares for a major Test series, discussions about the next global tournament have already begun.
“We have a one-day World Cup next year. They come around too quickly. And we’ve already been talking about that World Cup for probably the last 12 months,” Travis Head explained, highlighting Australia’s forward-thinking approach to global events.
