Australia’s in-form batter Travis Head downplayed concerns over his fitness after displaying discomfort during the rain-affected third Test against India at the Gabba, which ended in a draw on Wednesday. Head, who appeared to struggle with a potential groin issue, reassured fans and teammates, stating he expects to be “fine” for the crucial Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The five-match series stands evenly poised at 1-1.

“Very pleased with the way I am batting at the moment. Just a little sore, but I should be fine (before the next game),” Travis Head said during the post-match presentation. His consistent performances have been a highlight for Australia, amassing 409 runs at an exceptional average of 81.80 in the series so far.

During a brief innings of 17 runs on day five, Head seemed visibly hampered, clutching his groin and struggling with running between the wickets. His limited mobility raised alarm among commentators, with former pacer Brett Lee labeling the visuals as “worrying signs.” Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri also voiced concerns, calling a potential injury to Head a “body blow” for Australia, given his pivotal role in the batting lineup.

Adding to the speculation, Head did not take the field during India’s second innings. Reflecting on his performance this series, Head credited his ability to adapt to challenging conditions and maintain composure at the crease.

“Challenging wicket. I had to work through the gears. I had different plans, pleased I could get through those,” he said, highlighting his key partnership with Steve Smith in the Gabba Test, where their 241-run stand had been instrumental.

Head emphasized the importance of adjusting to the conditions and playing the situation. “I just try to sum up the conditions well. What I’ve done well this series is assess the conditions. Pleased with the tempo I’ve batted with,” he added. He also praised Smith’s influence, noting their “relaxed communication” and the confidence Smith provides as a reliable partner at the crease.

As Australia gears up for the Boxing Day Test, Head’s fitness will be closely monitored, given his importance in their bid to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
