Things went from bad to worse for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday as they suffered a huge batting collapse against the Mumbai Indians (MI). Super Kings were in a do-or-die situation to stay in contentions for the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, but they gave it in without putting much of a fight. The four-time champions’ bowlers especially, Trent Boult was all-over the CSK batsmen with the new ball and then their openers chased down a paltry without fretting much over it.

MI’s stand-in captain Kieron Pollard asked CSK to bat first after winning the toss and Trent Boult started the downfall as he dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad in the first over followed by Jasprit Bumrah dismissing Ambati Rayudu and N Jagadeesan in the next over. To make things worse, even Faf du Plessis was seen nicking one to the wicketkeeper off Boult. At 3/4 in the third over, CSK had already bagged an embarrassing record of aggregating the lowest score and the situation went from bad to worse.

The collapse escalated further with the dismissals of Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni as from 30/6 soon they came down to 43/7. However, Sam Curran then took things into his own hand as he added 28 runs with Shardul Thakur and 43 with Imran Tahir to take CSK to a respectable total of 114 runs for the loss of nine wickets. He scored a fifty in the final over before getting out off the final delivery.

The 115-run target at Sharjah was nothing but a cakewalk for MI as in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan opened the innings with Quinton de Kock. Kishan came out all guns blazing as he displayed his prowess and Deepak Chahar and Josh Hazlewood all-over the park. After not picking early wickets, CSK were not in the game and clearly, it wasn’t their day either.

Ishan Kishan enjoyed his stay in the middle as MI didn’t lose even a single wicket and finished the game in the 13th over of the innings with Kishan remaining unbeaten on 68 off 37 balls with six fours and five sixes to his name while De Kock slammed a sublime 46*. With this win, MI is now standing at the numero uno position at the points table while CSK have been ‘officially’ ruled out of the tournament before the playoffs for the first time ever.
