Veteran Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav made an impressive statement on his return to domestic cricket, claiming a five-wicket haul on his Ranji Trophy debut for Punjab against Assam. The 38-year-old pacer delivered a memorable performance at the PCA Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on Tuesday, October 13, demonstrating that his pace, experience and ability to trouble batters remain intact. After Punjab captain Uday Saharan elected to bowl first, Assam were eventually bowled out for 373 in 117 overs on Day 3. Umesh led Punjab’s bowling attack with outstanding figures of 5/70 in 24 overs at an economy rate of 2.90.

Gurnoor Brar and Emanjot Singh Chahal also made valuable contributions, claiming two wickets apiece. Assam had endured a difficult start after slipping to 23/3, but captain Denish Das and Sibsankar Roy rescued the innings with a crucial fourth-wicket partnership. Das scored 103, while Roy produced an impressive 143, as their 168-run stand helped Assam recover before Umesh returned to dismantle the lower order.

Umesh’s performance is particularly significant because he joined Punjab after ending his 18-year association with Vidarbha ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. Following his departure, the experienced pacer obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association and signed up with Punjab as a guest player.

The move has already delivered promising results for Punjab, with Umesh bringing valuable international experience and proven wicket-taking ability to the team’s pace attack. The veteran fast bowler made early inroads by dismissing Rishav Das for a duck and Rajveer Singh for 11. He later returned to remove Amlanjyoti Das, Mukhtar Hussain and Mohit Thakur, completing his five-wicket haul by cleaning up the tail.

With this performance, Umesh registered his 16th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. His achievement is even more noteworthy considering that he had been away from competitive domestic cricket for nearly two years. His previous appearance came in a Ranji Trophy match for Vidarbha against Andhra in Nagpur in October 2024. Making such a strong comeback in his first match for a new state team underlines his determination to continue competing at the highest level.

Umesh’s impressive performance sparked reactions on social media, particularly on X, formerly Twitter. Several cricket fans praised his bowling and experience in Indian conditions, with some urging the national selectors to consider him for a potential return to India’s Test setup.

Others highlighted his ability to generate pace and movement, while nostalgic supporters recalled his best performances in Indian colours. Some fans even called for him to be considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup, although his immediate prospects of returning to international cricket remain uncertain.

Umesh last represented India in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. Since then, the fast bowler has remained outside the national setup. Across his international career, Umesh claimed 288 wickets in 141 matches, including 10 four-wicket hauls and three five-wicket hauls, at an average of 31.62 and an economy rate of 4.29.

His latest Ranji Trophy performance has renewed discussion about his future. While a national comeback would depend on sustained performances, fitness and the selectors’ plans, Umesh has sent a clear message with his Punjab debut: his hunger for wickets remains undiminished.
