As one of the highly respected umpires in the cricketing world, Richard Illingworth was entrusted with officiating the crucial WTC final between India and Australia. Alongside his colleague Chris Gaffaney, he diligently carried out his duties over the course of three days. The incident unfolded when Australian batsman Steve Smith expressed his displeasure with a spectator sitting near the sight screen. The fan, wearing a bright red t-shirt, was hindering Smith’s concentration at the crease. Despite attempts by umpire Kumara Dharmasena to reason with the spectator, he remained adamant about staying in his seat.

It was then that the camera focused on Richard Illingworth, who humorously folded his hands and pleaded with the fan to change his position. Whether it was Illingworth’s gesture or the persuasion of the support staff, the fan eventually obliged and moved to a different spot, allowing the game to resume without further interruption.
