Pakistan’s run in the Asia Cup 2025 has been marred by off-field drama and now, an unfortunate on-field incident. Just hours after uncertainty over their participation against the UAE, Pakistan found themselves at the centre of yet another controversy when on-field umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge suffered a concussion scare after being struck by a throw from a Pakistan fielder.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had already been at loggerheads with match referee Andy Pycroft following the heated handshake row against India. With Pycroft appointed for the UAE clash, reports suggested that Salman Ali Agha’s side had even threatened a boycott.
Eventually, the ICC rejected Pakistan’s demand for his removal, though an official statement confirmed that Pycroft issued an apology before the game began after a one-hour delay.

Once the contest got underway, Pakistan managed only 146/9, with Shaheen Shah Afridi’s unbeaten 29 off 14 balls providing the late flourish. During UAE’s chase, however, the drama escalated when Ruchira Palliyaguruge was accidentally hit behind his left ear by a misdirected throw during the powerplay. The incident occurred after Dhruv Parashar nudged a ball to mid-on, and the return throw went astray.

Palliyaguruge immediately held his ear in pain as Pakistan players and the team physio rushed to his aid. With visible discomfort, he was forced to walk off the field, leaving a temporary void in officiating duties.
Bangladesh’s experienced umpire Gazi Sohel, who has overseen more than 50 T20Is, was called in as a replacement to continue the proceedings.
