In one of the most peculiar moments of recent T20 history, Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery to Mitchell Owen during the second IND vs AUS T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground turned into a bizarre yet unforgettable dismissal on Friday, October 31. It was a scene that left everyone — players, umpires, and fans — momentarily stunned before sparking waves of reactions online.

The drama unfolded in the 18th over of Australia’s run chase. Bumrah, mixing his pace intelligently, bowled a clever slower off-cutter that nipped slightly off the surface. Mitchell Owen, attempting to create room for a booming drive, could only manage a faint edge that carried through to Sanju Samson behind the stumps. Both Bumrah and Samson instantly went up in a confident appeal for a caught-behind, but on-field umpire Wayne Knights initially shook his head to deny it.

Just as Bumrah gestured for a review, Knights suddenly changed his mind and raised his finger — an unexpected U-turn that caught both teams by surprise. Owen, visibly confused, opted for a DRS review, but the UltraEdge technology soon confirmed a clear spike as the ball passed the bat. The decision stood, and Bumrah had his man.

Owen departed for 14 off 10 balls, while Bumrah, ever composed, celebrated with his trademark calm demeanour. The unusual sequence — from the appeal to the umpire’s reversal — quickly went viral, with fans calling it one of the strangest dismissals of the series.

Despite India’s spirited fightback with the ball, Australia comfortably cruised to a four-wicket victory, reaching the target with 40 balls to spare. It marked India’s second-biggest T20I defeat in terms of balls remaining — their heaviest being against the same opponent at the same venue back in 2008, when Australia won with 52 balls left.

Earlier, India’s innings never really gained momentum after being asked to bat first. Abhishek Sharma’s sublime 68 off 37 deliveries stood out as a rare positive in an otherwise lacklustre batting display that ended at 125. Josh Hazlewood was exceptional for Australia, claiming 3/13 and earning the Player of the Match award for his fiery new-ball spell that crippled India early.

For India, Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets each, but the total proved too small to defend. After the match, skipper Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged Hazlewood’s impact, praising Abhishek’s consistency while urging his side to show better intent in Hobart, where the third T20I will be played on November 2.
