A high-drama over took the centre stage during the series decider third and final T20I of the series between the hosts Bangladesh and the visitors’ Windies at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (Mirpur, Dhaka) on Saturday night. It was the 4th over of the second innings of the game when the hosts were chasing 191-run to win that game & series too and the Caribbean pacer Oshane Thomas was bowling that over which had a huge controversy.

The controversial no-ball call

The first no-ball

On the fifth ball of that over, when Thomas was bowling to the Bangladesh opener Liton Das, the bowling end umpire Tanvir Ahmed called for a front-foot no-ball that travelled to the four and awarded a free-hit to Bangladesh. The replay showed that Thomas’ front-foot didn’t cross the bowling-line entirely, so it was totally a wrong call by the umpire. In free-hit, Das smashed for a sixer.

However, the big controversial incident happened after that incident. Going for the final ball of that over, Thomas delivered a wide-ball and stretched that over for further.

In the next delivery, Das hit but that was caught at the mid-off by Sherfane Rutherford. However, the bowling end umpire Tanvir Ahmed again called for a front-foot no-ball and awarded another free-hit. While every Windies’ players were devastated on that situation, they became frustrated after watching on the big screen that again Thomas’ front-foot didn’t cross the bowling-line entirely and the umpire was wrong on his decision.

(Windies skipper demanding for the existing review)

Windies skipper Carlos Brathwaite was attempting to go for their existing review but it was unavailable for that time. However, it is still unknown about the actual reason why that review was unavailable, but it might be due to the 15-second window was already ended before Brathwaite decided to take that review.

It was a very confusing period for everyone including the on-field umpires. Especially, the controversial umpire Tanvir Ahmed messed up in that situation as once he was just going for the third umpire decision and after a few moments later he raised his finger to give it out.

(Match referee came to the sideline)

However, the confusion was still on as the match referee Jeff Crowe came to the sideline and had the long chatting with the Windies skipper Brathwaite and the team management & coaching staff. Bangladesh T20I skipper Shakib Al Hasan joined in the sideline who prepared to come on the field as the next batsman but confused on that situation and was waiting for the final decision.

(Ultimate decision was – not out with the front-foot no-ball)

After the long chat, where the Windies skipper Brathwaite seemed frustrated with that situation, it was decided to stay with the initial decision which was not out due to the front-foot no-ball. Very obviously, the visitors were not happy with that decision but decided to go with the situation.

It means the next ball was free-hit which Soumya Sarkar hit for a sixer. It was around 10 minutes gap between the controversial no-ball delivery and the next free-hit delivery. It took around 16 minutes to complete that entire over where Bangladesh added 30 runs in that over.

However, Windies still won the game and also won the series by 2-1. Chasing down the 191-run target that was settled by the visitors (190 in 19.2 overs), Bangladesh was bundled out for just 140 runs in 17 overs.
