Virat Kohli’s surprise meeting with Ayush Mhatre has become one of the most talked-about moments from India’s ongoing domestic and international cricket storyline, especially as both players continue to shape the next generation of Indian cricket in their own ways. The India National Cricket Team are currently on tour in Ireland, where they suffered a 34-run defeat in the opening T20I against the Irish National Cricket Team on Friday.

Shreyas Iyer’s side failed to chase down 183 as Lorcan Tucker-led Ireland produced a famous result, handing the reigning world champions a rare setback. With the T20I series in Ireland done, India will head to England for a white-ball tour that includes five T20Is and three ODIs. Ahead of the ODI leg, Virat Kohli, who is in line to feature subject to fitness, visited the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a routine fitness assessment.
That is where he crossed paths with Ayush Mhatre, the U-19 World Cup-winning captain who is currently undergoing rehabilitation after a hamstring injury ruled him out of IPL 2026 during his stint with Chennai Super Kings. The meeting naturally drew attention because both Kohli and Mhatre have led India to U-19 World Cup glory, with Kohli captaining the 2008 triumph and Mhatre the 2026 campaign.

Mhatre, meanwhile, has often spoken about his admiration for Rohit Sharma and his desire to model parts of his batting around the India captain’s pull shot. Being part of the Mumbai setup and sharing dressing-room time with senior stars has only helped him refine his game further.
On the form front, Kohli enjoyed a stellar IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, finishing as their top run-scorer with 675 runs at an average of 56.25 and a strike rate of 165.84. He capped the season with a Player of the Match performance in the final, scoring an unbeaten 75 and helping RCB secure their second straight title.
