Rohit Sharma reportedly wants to continue representing India in ODI cricket, with the 2027 ODI World Cup remaining his ultimate goal. However, recent reports suggest that the national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has decided to move in a different direction as part of its long-term plans.

According to reports, the selectors have informed both Rohit and head coach Gautam Gambhir that they are looking to build a younger squad ahead of the next World Cup cycle. The veteran opener is also believed to have discussed the matter with senior BCCI officials during the ongoing ODI series against England.

A senior BCCI source told PTI that the selectors are eager to give Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended run in the 50-over format.

“The national selectors are keen that Yashasvi Jaiswal gets a longer rope. There are around 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and he needs those opportunities to establish himself,” the source said.

The official added that while no one can force Rohit Sharma into retirement, the selectors are focused on the future.

“No one can tell Rohit to retire, but for the upcoming home series against West Indies, the selectors want to look ahead. The final decision on his future rests with Rohit,” the source added.

The report also claimed that Rohit and the selectors had differences over his Test retirement. While the selection committee reportedly preferred him to continue through the England series, Rohit announced his retirement before the tour. According to PTI, the former India captain had made himself available for all five Tests and had no intention of playing only the opening two matches.
