Glenn Maxwell’s underwhelming performance in IPL 2024 has left fans and analysts alike questioning when the Australian all-rounder will exhibit his true potential. With Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) languishing at the bottom of the points table, Maxwell’s struggle to make an impact has exacerbated the team’s woes. As they prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad, each game is critical for RCB’s survival in the tournament.
In the six games Maxwell has played so far, he has only managed to score 32 runs, enduring three ducks along the way. His inability to perform up to expectations has been a significant setback for RCB. Addressing Maxwell’s batting woes, cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar candidly pointed out that Maxwell has struggled against fast bowling, particularly deliveries above waist height.
“He has been unable to play fast bowling, period. Balls bouncing to his chest or shoulder height are troubling him. He can whack every ball below his waist height but not the ones above that,” remarked Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports. He emphasized that Maxwell’s difficulties could persist, especially with the prevalent conditions favoring fast bowlers on Indian tracks until mid-April.

Sunil Gavaskar’s assessment sheds light on a broader issue faced by several high-profile players struggling to read bowling effectively in the tournament. Despite Maxwell’s setback, RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, assured Maxwell’s fitness following a thumb injury sustained during the match against Mumbai Indians.
“Maxi has had a couple of scans, and he’s okay at the minute. So, there’s no injury concerns. He’s going to practice today and get more of a feel,” stated Mo Bobat during the pre-match press conference. He acknowledged Maxwell’s disappointment and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to supporting him in regaining his form.

“He’s disappointed. He has high standards and has had a very, very impressive 12 to 24 months. He’s in our plans and is an important part of our batting lineup. So, up until now, we’re trying to support him as best as we can and help him find his best form,” added Mo Bobat.
As RCB navigates through a crucial phase in the tournament, Maxwell’s resurgence could be pivotal in revitalizing the team’s fortunes and steering them towards success.
