Ahead of the start of the 15th over of India’s chase, India was awarded five penalty runs during its T20 World Cup 2024 match in New York on Wednesday after the USA committed a time limit offence. According to the rules, a side is allotted 60 seconds between overs, and the bowler must be ready to deliver the first ball of the next over within this time limit.

The USA failed to adhere to this limit thrice, resulting in India receiving a five-run bonus before the start of the 16th over of their innings. At the time, India was on 76 runs after 15 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube at the crease. The penalty brought their total to 81, nudging them closer to the 111-run target they were pursuing.

Earlier in the game, India found themselves struggling at 44/3 in the 8th over. However, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube steadied the ship for the Men in Blue, guiding them to a seven-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare. Starting the chase of 111 runs, India faced an early shock when Virat Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck by USA’s Saurabh Netravalkar at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Despite Kohli’s outstanding performance as an opener in the Indian Premier League, his transition to the same role in the T20 World Cup has been challenging. The former Indian captain has struggled to make an impact, being dismissed for single digits in all three matches for India so far.

On Wednesday, Kohli faced a full-length delivery from former Mumbai pacer Saurabh Netravalkar. Attempting a drive, Kohli edged the ball to wicketkeeper Andreis Gous, marking his first duck in a T20 World Cup game. His scores in this edition have been disappointing, with 1 (vs Ireland), 4 (vs Pakistan), and 0 (vs USA).

Saurabh Netravalkar’s impressive performance continued as he also claimed the wicket of India captain Rohit Sharma in his second over, putting India under significant pressure early in their innings.

Despite these early setbacks, the USA managed to post a total of 110/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Their batsmen showed resilience, with key contributions from several players ensuring they had a competitive score on the board.

The match highlighted the unpredictability and excitement of T20 cricket, where even seasoned players like Kohli and Rohit can face unexpected challenges. As India aims to secure their place in the Super 8 stage, overcoming such hurdles will be crucial. The upcoming games will test the adaptability and resilience of the Indian batting lineup as they strive to bounce back from these early setbacks and continue their quest for T20 World Cup glory.
