Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s remarkable rise in Indian cricket has been one of the biggest talking points of 2026. The teenage batting sensation earned widespread recognition after his explosive performances in the Indian Premier League, where he showcased fearless strokeplay and maturity beyond his years. However, the young opener is currently facing a different challenge during India A’s ongoing one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka.

In the latest match against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi once again got off to a promising start but failed to convert it into a substantial score. Opening the innings alongside Prabhsimran Singh, the left-hander looked in excellent touch early on. He attacked the new-ball bowlers, Mohamed Shiraz and Chamika Gunasekara, striking three boundaries and a six to put pressure on the hosts.

Recognising the danger, Sri Lanka A introduced spinner Sahan Arachchige into the attack, and the move paid immediate dividends. Attempting an aggressive shot against a flighted delivery, Sooryavanshi mistimed the ball and was caught at point. His innings ended at 21 off just 14 deliveries, leaving India A frustrated after another promising start went to waste.

The dismissal continued a concerning trend for the 15-year-old in the tournament. In the opening match of the tri-series, he managed only 14 runs, while against Afghanistan A he showed greater patience before scoring a brisk 44. Despite displaying flashes of his immense talent, Sooryavanshi has now failed to convert starts into the kind of innings expected from a top-order batter.

These performances come at a crucial stage of his career. The youngster has already earned a call-up to India’s senior squad and is expected to make his international debut in the upcoming two-match series against Ireland in Belfast. A few significant scores in Sri Lanka would have provided an ideal confidence boost before stepping onto the international stage.

While Sooryavanshi’s aggressive approach proved highly successful in T20 cricket and during his IPL breakthrough season, the ongoing tri-series is highlighting the different demands of the 50-over format. The Indian selectors will be keen to see him adapt his game, construct longer innings, and demonstrate consistency before he becomes a serious contender for an ODI spot.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad has emerged as India A’s most reliable batter in the competition. After scoring a century in the opening game and a composed half-century in the second match, the experienced opener continued his solid run with a valuable 37 off 42 balls, once again providing stability during a challenging batting effort.
