Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-awaited breakthrough in senior international cricket finally arrived in his fourth T20I appearance as the teenage sensation produced a breathtaking knock against Zimbabwe in the first T20I at the Harare Sports Club. After modest scores of 14, 13 and 15 during India’s T20I series against England, the 15-year-old opener silenced his critics with a fearless display of strokeplay, helping India take complete control of the chase.
Chasing 126, Sooryavanshi made full use of Zimbabwe’s inconsistent bowling attack. The left-handed batter dominated the powerplay, smashing four boundaries and four towering sixes on his way to a sensational 18-ball half-century. His entertaining innings came to an end on the very next delivery after reaching the milestone, but by then he had already etched his name into cricket history.

The blistering knock saw Sooryavanshi break two major world records, including one that had stood in Sachin Tendulkar’s name since 1989. At just 15 years and 118 days, he became the youngest player from a Full Member nation to score a maiden international fifty.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also became the youngest player to register a 50-plus score in men’s international cricket across both Full Member and Associate nations. Before him, Nepal’s Kushal Malla held the record after scoring an ODI half-century against the USA at 15 years and 340 days in 2020.
Earlier in the day, India’s bowlers laid the perfect platform for the chase with a disciplined performance. Returning to international cricket for the first time since October 2024, Mayank Yadav made an immediate impact by dismissing Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match after India successfully overturned the on-field decision through DRS.

Bowling consistently above 145 kmph, Mayank added another wicket by removing Dion Myers, while debutant Ashok Sharma settled into his spell after a nervy start. Shivam Dube dismissed Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, and Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with the wicket of Ryan Burl to keep the hosts under pressure.
Despite useful contributions from Wessly Madhevere (38) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (27*), Zimbabwe could only manage 125/7 in their 20 overs. India’s impressive bowling effort, followed by Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking innings, put Shreyas Iyer’s side firmly on course for their first victory under his captaincy after difficult tours of Ireland and England.
