With uncertainty surrounding the ODI futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the BCCI has quietly begun grooming the next generation of Indian cricket stars. Among the most talked-about names is 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has now been flown to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru for specialised training ahead of India A’s tour of Australia starting September 21.

Suryavanshi shot to fame earlier this year when he smashed a 35-ball century on his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals — becoming the youngest in league history to achieve the feat. His form carried into the U19 tour of England, where he dominated the one-day series, scoring 355 runs at an average of 71 and a blistering strike-rate of 174.02, finishing as the top run-getter.
After returning from England, Suryavanshi first trained with the Rajasthan Royals before joining the COE on August 10. There, the BCCI has designed a tailored programme focused on match-specific scenarios to prepare him for the demands of international cricket.

“BCCI is looking ahead. The senior players are gradually retiring, and the next batch of youngsters must be fully ready. Vaibhav’s training is part of that process. We identify talents one by one and prepare them accordingly,” said his childhood coach Manish Ojha, speaking to MyKhel.

While Suryavanshi’s white-ball numbers are extraordinary, his red-ball game is still a work in progress. In two red-ball matches on the England tour, he managed 90 runs across four innings.
“He can attack from ball one, which is a big asset in T20s and ODIs. We’ve seen it in the IPL, U19 cricket, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. But in the longer formats, his performance dips. The goal is to ensure that in 10 innings, at least 7-8 are impactful,” Manish Ojha added.

As India looks beyond its modern-day greats, Vaibhav Suryavanshi could well be the face of the next era — if he can master every format.
