Varun Chakaravarthy showcased his brilliance in the recently concluded T20I series between India and South Africa, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the four-match contest. After India’s emphatic win in the fourth T20I at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on November 15, the 33-year-old mystery spinner reflected on his performance and the challenges he faced during the series.
Chakaravarthy admitted that the conditions in the last two games, played in Centurion and Johannesburg, posed significant challenges for spinners due to the smaller boundaries. Despite these obstacles, he credited India’s decision to field three spinners throughout the series as a pivotal factor in their success.
“The last two matches were challenging because of the small boundaries. Even though a few sixes were hit, one mis-shot could get us a wicket. We went with three spinners in the series, and it worked for us,” Varun Chakravarthy remarked during the post-match presentation.

The Tamil Nadu spinner also emphasized the importance of his bowling partnership with leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, which proved instrumental in India’s dominance. “Me and Bishnoi set up a partnership, and it worked,” he noted, highlighting their combined efforts to dismantle South Africa’s batting line-up.
To counter the South African batters, Chakaravarthy devised a strategy to avoid their hitting zones, particularly given the shorter boundaries. “The best approach was to stay away from the arc, and I bowled a few short balls, which actually worked for me,” he explained, shedding light on his tactical adjustments.

The fourth T20I was a showcase of India’s dominance. After electing to bat, India posted a mammoth 283/1, courtesy of scintillating centuries from Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma. In response, South Africa collapsed to 148 all out in 18.2 overs, with Arshdeep Singh claiming three crucial wickets. India’s commanding 135-run victory not only sealed the match but also secured a 3-1 series win, highlighting the team’s formidable form in the shortest format.
