India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has opened up about his bowling approach, making it clear that his role is to attack even if it comes at the cost of leaking a few runs. Having made a strong comeback to international cricket, Varun now finds himself at the top of the ICC T20I bowling rankings, a testament to his consistency and impact.

During India’s recent Super Four victory against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2025, Varun’s spell perfectly reflected his philosophy. He conceded 13 runs in his first over but came back strongly to claim two key wickets, eventually finishing with figures of 2 for 29 from four overs.
The numbers could have looked even better had India’s fielding been sharper on the night. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Varun Chakravarthy explained his mindset in the powerplay.

“In the powerplay, the only aim is to look for wickets. It’s just about bowling that one perfect delivery — pitching it in the right spot, getting some turn, and forcing the edge. That’s my role in the team. Even if I go for runs, my focus is to keep attacking and search for breakthroughs,” he said.

Varun also spoke about the work he has been putting into his overall game. After a busy IPL campaign, he featured in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, before taking a short break to work intensively on his skills. Interestingly, the spinner has also been focusing on improving his batting and fielding.

“After TNPL, I had a week off, which I used to practice a lot. I’ve been spending time on my batting and fielding because I want to contribute in every way possible,” Varun Chakravarthy revealed.
So far in the tournament, Varun has taken four wickets in as many matches and is expected to play a key role again when India take on Sri Lanka in their final Super Four clash on September 26.
