Varun Chakaravarthy, India’s mystery spinner known for bamboozling batters with his deceptive variations, recently revealed the most formidable opponents he’s faced in his cricketing journey. Despite outfoxing some of the world’s best, even Chakaravarthy admits a few batters have managed to get the better of him — and the names are nothing short of explosive.

In a candid chat on Breakfast with Champions, Chakaravarthy was quick to name three batters who’ve consistently troubled him: Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, and the in-form Abhishek Sharma. “Chris Gayle, Virat (Kohli), and of late, it’s been Abhishek Sharma — your previous guest,” he said with a smile.
The 33-year-old spinner also took a playful jab at Abhishek Sharma, who’s been on a dream run with the bat, particularly after his fiery performances in the 2025 Asia Cup. “You should tell him to be soft on the bowlers in the nets. But touch wood, he keeps batting like this for India — maybe just not for SRH,” Varun Chakravarthy joked.

Chakaravarthy also addressed the bizarre conclusion to India’s 2025 Asia Cup victory, where the team lifted the title but didn’t receive the trophy due to a mix-up involving ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. Remaining unfazed, the spinner said, “I knew that we would win all games. We are the number one team in the world. The cup can be taken away, but we are champions.”

Away from the pitch, the Tamil Nadu cricketer described himself as an introvert who enjoys solitude. “I’m not like Arshdeep or Nayar, who are outspoken. I’ve always had a slightly dark humour,” he admitted.
Interestingly, before becoming a cricketer, Chakaravarthy was an architect — and he still channels that creativity through writing. “After practice, I go to my room and write. It helps me stay grounded and express myself. By the end, I forget I’m even a cricketer,” he shared.
A spinner with mystery in his craft and depth in his personality, Varun Chakaravarthy continues to remain one of Indian cricket’s most intriguing figures.
