At 37, most cricketers begin contemplating retirement — but not Andre Russell. If Varun Chakravarthy is to be believed, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ all-round powerhouse has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. He’s thinking long-term. Following KKR’s thrilling one-run win over Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on May 4, Chakravarthy revealed a candid conversation he had with Russell, one that offered fans a glimpse into the West Indian’s mindset.

“As far as I’ve spoken to him, he still wants to play another two or three IPL cycles — which is like six more years,” said Varun Chakravarthy in the post-match media interaction. “He’s fit, and it doesn’t matter how old you are if you’re still contributing to the team. That’s the mindset he carries.”

Russell certainly contributed — and how. With KKR teetering at 111/3, he walked in and unleashed carnage, hammering an unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls. His knock was studded with brute power and timely patience, especially against spin. Once labelled vulnerable against slower bowlers, Russell flipped the script by holding back against spin early on before going after Maheesh Theekshana with brutal efficiency at the death.

“It’s not true that he struggles against spin,” Varun Chakravarthy asserted. “He smashes spin in the nets all the time. Today, he took a different approach — he was patient and waited for the right moment. That’s smart cricket, and it shows how he’s evolved.”
It’s this mix of maturity, power, and self-belief that could very well stretch Russell’s IPL journey into his 40s. The hunger is evident, the fitness seems intact, and the impact, especially in crunch moments, remains Russell-esque.

KKR’s hard-fought win over Rajasthan not only lifted spirits in the camp but also kept their playoff hopes alive. They currently sit sixth with 10 points from 11 matches, and their upcoming fixture against Chennai Super Kings on May 7 is nothing short of a must-win. With Russell firing and the squad showing character, KKR will back themselves to finish strong — and perhaps give Russell another reason to keep chasing IPL glory for years to come.
