India has kicked off their T20 World Cup 2024 journey in style, securing a convincing victory against Ireland. While much talk swirls around the challenging conditions at Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York, it’s the standout performances of several Indian players that are turning heads.

In their opening match of Group A against Ireland, India showcased a masterclass, first restricting their opponents to a meagre 96 runs before effortlessly chasing down the target in just 12.2 overs, ultimately clinching an eight-wicket win.

Although the bowlers stole the spotlight, it was the contributions of captain Rohit Sharma, who scored a composed 52 off 37 deliveries, and Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 36 off 26 that proved pivotal in navigating the treacherous pitch.

Facing the challenge of an unpredictable pitch favouring the bowlers, the Indian batsmen had to tread cautiously. Pant, however, remained undeterred despite sustaining multiple blows to his body. Displaying nerves of steel, he executed a reverse scoop to seal the victory with a six off Barry McCarthy, immediately after being struck on the arm.

Pant’s stellar performance isn’t limited to this match alone. He also notched up a rapid fifty in India’s warm-up game against Bangladesh, earning him the coveted No. 3 spot in the batting lineup, with Suryakumar Yadav dropping down to No. 4.

Speaking to the media post-match, India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, lauded Pant’s form, stating, “Yes, he has been batting really well. The two games he has played, he has looked really, really good.” Vikram Rathour confirmed Pant’s promotion to No. 3, emphasizing the advantage of having a left-hander in that crucial position.

India’s joy extends beyond batting prowess, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s impressive bowling performance drawing praise. Despite a lacklustre showing in the IPL 2024, Pandya delivered a stellar performance, claiming figures of 3/27 from his four overs.

“Hardik looked really good. Even in the practice game and sessions, he’s been bowling really well. He looks fit enough to go through four overs, and he’s been bowling with some pace and accuracy,” remarked Vikram Rathour, highlighting Pandya’s resurgence on the international stage.
