Virat And Anushka Shares Important Message Amid Lockdown

The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli shared an important video message on Instagram on the intimidation of domestic violence amid the nationwide lockdown enforced to fight the spread of coronavirus pandemic. Apart from the Indian skipper, the video also features his wife and actor Anushka Sharma.

In the video, India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma and former India women’s captain Mithali Raj can also be seen apart from a few Bollywood celebrities. Captioning the video of the same, Virat wrote, “If you have been a victim, witness or a survivor of the domestic violence, please report.” The video was also shared by Anushka.

The video features Bollywood stars like Farhan Akhtar, Karan Johar and Madhuri Dixit among others.

All the celebrities in eth video were heard saying, “During the lockdown, there has been a sharp increase in the number of domestic violence cases. They also urged both men to stand up to the violence and to women to “break your silence”. They urge both witnesses and survivors of domestic violence to report such cases, concluding with the message: “Let’s put a lockdown on domestic violence”.

According to data shared by the National Commission for Women (NCW), they received as many as 239 domestic violence complaints related to domestic violence between March 22 and April 16. They had received 123 complaints from February 27 and March 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared the lockdown from March 24 to help fight the spread of the novel coronavirus.

NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma earlier said that the high number can be attributed to the lockdown imposed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus outbreak which has locked the abuser and the victim together. As per the report of PTI on April 18, more than 50 helplines have been started across India to help women facing domestic violence during the ongoing lockdown.

Talking to PTI, an official from the home ministry said, “Fifty-two helplines have been started in different parts of the country to help women facing domestic violence during the lockdown.”

While some of these helplines are active nationally, some are state specific and others were set up at district level.
