Star India batsman Virat Kohli and the interim head coach of Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya, had a lengthy discussion after the second ODI between their teams on Sunday, August 4, 2017, at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The contest saw Sri Lanka come up trumps by 32 runs to break the sequence of back-to-back ties from the third T20 and the first ODI.
The 15th over of the India innings witnessed a controversial moment in the game. Kohli glanced the final ball of Dhananjaya de Silva’s over towards the onside, missing altogether as the ball hit his pads. Almost immediately after the Sri Lankan appeal, the on-field umpire raised his finger.
Immediately, however, Virat Kohli opted for a DRS, and this time, it was reversed when the ultra edge showed there was a definite nick from Kohli’s bat onto his pads. This did not go down very well with the Sri Lankan players, who reacted quite openly on the field.

Wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis was apparently seen throwing his helmet in disgust while captain Charith Asalanka had heatedly discussed the matter with on-field umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri. It had a cheeky Kohli smile on, while Jayasuriya was involved in a heated discussion with the reserve umpire.

Not clear if both Kohli or Jayasuriya were discussing the same controversial DRS verdict that was overturned moments later, but their animated chat was the subject of the day. There was no real impact on the game with the overturned decision. Kohli was soon dismissed lbw by Jefrey Vandersay for a 14 off 19 balls.

Jeffrey Vandersay had an equally good bowling performance, taking six wickets for 33 runs in his ten-over spell. It literally broke the Indian middle order. In the end, India was bowled out for 208 runs, trying to chase 241, setting Sri Lanka for a 1-0 lead in the series. The last ODI of the series will be played on Wednesday, August 7, at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. That match has now taken the importance for the host side, which had otherwise been just a dead rubber.
