Gautam Gambhir’s reign as head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team kicks off with a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, a series brimming with intrigue. The 42-year-old former cricketer takes the reins from Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded last month. The tour, starting July 27th, features three T20Is followed by a three-match ODI series concluding on August 7th.

The BCCI announced the squad on July 18th, with a dual-captaincy approach. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the younger brigade in the T20Is, while the experienced Rohit Sharma returns from a well-deserved break to captain the ODI team. A surprise inclusion came in the form of Virat Kohli, who was initially expected to be rested alongside Rohit.

Virat Kohli’s return to the ODI fold marks a significant development, considering reports suggested he would primarily focus on Test cricket. According to Cricbuzz, Kohli has assured the BCCI that past differences with Gambhir, including heated on-field clashes during IPL matches, won’t impede their professional relationship.

Reports suggest Kohli, following discussions post-World Cup, has communicated his commitment to working towards the team’s success despite past disagreements. This news throws light on the BCCI’s strategy.

While Gautam Gambhir might have expressed his desire to have senior players like Kohli and Rohit involved, the board seems to be striking a balance between experience and youth development. The decision to rest premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah showcases this intent to manage workload and give younger talents an opportunity.

This tour serves as a crucial stepping stone for the squad as they prepare for bigger challenges on the horizon.
