Virat Kohli once again stole the spotlight with his trademark intensity as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by 23 runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on May 17 to become the first team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs. The former RCB captain was at his animated best throughout the contest, constantly urging teammates on, celebrating every wicket, and feeding off the pressure of the big occasion.
From sharp fielding efforts to key breakthroughs, Kohli’s energy lifted the side at crucial moments and gave the match the intensity expected from a late-season blockbuster in Dharamsala. Virat Kohli also delivered with the bat after RCB were asked to bat first.
Opening the innings, he anchored the innings with a classy 58 off 37 balls, striking four boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 156.76. His calm presence at the top ensured RCB recovered well after the early loss of Jacob Bethell and kept the scoreboard moving through the middle overs.

The innings was powered further by a superb unbeaten 73 off 40 balls from Venkatesh Iyer, who hammered eight fours and four sixes to keep the pressure firmly on Punjab Kings. RCB finished with a commanding 222/4 in 20 overs, while Harpreet Brar was PBKS’ most effective bowler with figures of 2 for 35.

In reply, Punjab Kings never quite found the tempo needed to chase the target. Shashank Singh fought hard with a brisk 56 off 27 balls, including four fours and four sixes, but the top-order collapse left too much to do.

RCB’s bowlers held their nerve under pressure. Rasikh Salam Dar led the attack with three wickets for 36 runs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up two vital wickets, and the rest of the bowling unit chipped in to restrict PBKS to 199/8 and seal a vital win.
