The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, and head coach Ravi Shastri were evidently unhappy when the English skipper, Joe Root lived to fight another day after surviving a close LBW appeal towards the close of play on the moving day of the ongoing 2nd Test in Chennai. Root was trapped in front in the final over of the day by Axar Patel and India initially appealed for caught behind.

However, the Indian gloveman, Rishabh Pant was confident but on-field umpire Nitin Menon was decided no to entertain the appeal. After a long discussion, India went for the review. The replays showed the ball was crashing on the back pad of Joe Root, but no edge was detected. However, since the point of impact appeared to be on the line, the third umpire also checked for LBW. Slow-motion replays suggested that the ball had hit Root on line as a part of the off-stump was even visible when the ball impacted his pad.

However, the DRS ball-tracking system ruled it as umpire’s call, which left the Indian players disappointed and the vocal Chennai fans bewildered. Virat Kohli was not happy with the decision as he walked up to the umpire to express his displeasure. Kohli was seen having a long conversation with the umpire before the players carried on with the proceedings.

After the day’s play ended in Chennai, head coach Ravi Shastri was spotted getting some clarity about the decision from the umpires as the players and the officials headed back to the pavilion.

As it turned out, the impact was the umpire’s call even though the ball seemingly hit the pads in line. The decision after the DRS review has once again raised a lot of questions on the accuracy of the technology that is in place in the sport.

Not just Kohli and Shastri, quite a few fans of the sport were also surprised with the decision that went in favor of Root.

Joe Root remained unbeaten on 2 while Daniel Lawrence managed to pull off a solid effort to head to close of play unbeaten on 19. England though were reduced to 53 for 3 as they are staring at a big defeat after having set a target of 481.
