Virat Kohli once again showcased why he remains one of the finest students—and teachers—of the game. Fresh off guiding India to a 2-1 ODI series win against South Africa with a composed, unbeaten 65 in Visakhapatnam, Kohli spent his post-match moments mentoring South Africa’s rising star Dewald Brevis. It was a scene that quickly captured the internet: the modern great sharing technical wisdom with a youngster often compared to AB de Villiers.

Brevis, who looked promising but flawed during his run-a-ball 29 earlier in the match, struggled particularly with the pull shot—miscueing multiple attempts as India’s pacers tested him with short-pitched bowling. Eager to improve, ‘Baby AB’ sought out Kohli for guidance immediately after the game. Kohli, still in his playing gear and holding his bat from the unbeaten knock, happily obliged.

In the video doing the rounds, Kohli can be seen explaining the importance of not falling back excessively while playing the horizontal-bat shots. With a subtle forward press, he demonstrated how to transfer weight forward and maintain a strong body shape while executing the pull. His movements were deliberate—shoulders aligned, head steady, bat path controlled—as he mimicked a pull toward mid-wicket. The message was clear: meet the ball early, get on top of the bounce, and avoid being caught off balance.

This advice mirrors how Kohli himself has mastered the pull over the years. One of the finest examples remains his dominating strike against Mitchell Johnson during the 2014–15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the MCG, where he handled high-quality pace with confidence rooted in his technique-first approach.

Kohli’s resurgence in the ongoing season has also been a story in itself. After beginning with back-to-back ducks against Australia, he stormed back with scores of 74*, 135, 102, and 65*—a stunning return to form. His twin centuries in Ranchi and Raipur felt reminiscent of the vintage Kohli era between 2016 and 2019.

At 37, he capped the series with the Player of the Series award, silencing doubts about longevity and reaffirming that he remains very much in the frame for the ICC World Cup 2027 in South Africa.
