Virat Kohli, one of India’s most iconic cricketers, officially announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, May 12, via an emotional Instagram post. Having represented India in 123 Test matches since his debut in 2011, Kohli, the 269th Test player for India, brought the curtain down on a legendary red-ball career that saw him redefine intensity, fitness, and consistency in the longest format.

Soon after sharing his farewell note, Virat Kohli was seen at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with his wife, actor Anushka Sharma. The couple’s appearance sparked speculation on social media about their next destination.

While no official details have been confirmed, there’s strong buzz suggesting they may be heading to Bengaluru, as Kohli is expected to rejoin the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad for the resumption of IPL 2025, which is likely to restart later this week.

Kohli’s Test journey ended with a remarkable 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries — numbers that place him among the greats of Indian cricket. Reflecting on his decision, Kohli admitted that walking away from Tests wasn’t easy, but it was the right time.

“As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for,” he wrote in his post. “I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.”

Kohli signs off as #269 — a symbol of an era built on passion and pride.
