India’s batting stalwart Virat Kohli once again demonstrated his commitment to fitness and athleticism with a spectacular catch during the first ODI against New Zealand. At 37, the former India captain continues to set high standards in the field, producing an outstanding effort at slip off Anshul Kamboj’s bowling.

The dismissal came when New Zealand batter Nathan Smith attempted to drive a full delivery from Kamboj. However, Smith managed only a thick outside edge, sending the ball flying low towards the right of second slip. Kohli reacted quickly, dived to his left and grabbed the ball inches above the ground. He immediately signalled that he had completed the catch cleanly, leaving little room for doubt.
Kohli then added some entertainment to the moment with a lively bow-and-arrow celebration. He stuck out his tongue and shared a cheeky smile with a teammate, bringing a touch of humour to his impressive fielding effort.

The catch also comes amid discussions about Kohli’s place in India’s plans for next year’s ODI World Cup in South Africa. While questions have been raised by a section of critics, his performances in the field underline the athleticism, dedication and work ethic he continues to bring to international cricket.

Mealamu made 132 appearances for New Zealand’s national rugby team, captained the side and remains one of the most-capped players in All Blacks history. He was also part of the teams that won the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015.
The pre-match ceremony featured a traditional Maori chant performed by cultural exponents as both teams were escorted into the stadium, adding to the festive atmosphere in Auckland.
