Virat Kohli led India have started their T20I series in New Zealand with a bang. In the five-match series, they have taken a 2-0 lead at the Eden Park in Auckland. They need only one win on January 29 at the Seddon Park in Hamilton to win the five-match T20I series as well.
Although India have been doing well, Kohli needs to step up. He scored in the 40s in the first game but failed to do well in the second game. In the second T20I, he was caught down the leg-side. In both of India’s win in Auckland, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s heroics saved the team.
Amidst all these, Virat is set to break yet another record at the highest level. He is only 25 runs away of MS Dhoni’s tally as India’s leading run-scorer as captain in T20Is. Faf du Plessis, the former South Africa captain, has 1,273 runs with New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and Dhoni having 1,148 and 1,112 runs respectively.

Given the form Virat Kohli has been in, it won’t be a tough job for him to break the record in the next game itself. Apart from Dhoni’s record, Virat is also on the verge of another all-time record. He is currently level with Du Plessis and Williamson in the list of most half-centuries as captain in the T20 format. They have eight fifties with Virat having a tally of 24.
Virat Kohli is currently the leading run-scorer in T20Is, having scored 2745 runs in 80 matches at an average of 51.79. The Delhi-born batter also has the most T20I half-centuries to his name with a top score of an unbeaten 94 against the West Indies in Hyderabad in December 2019. In the ongoing T20I series, the top three all-time highest T20I runs scorers are all playing. Along with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Martin Guptill, second and third-placed respectively, are also playing as well.
