Mumbai Indians (MI) won their 5th title in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 but it was the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who emerged victorious on social media despite them failing to qualify for the playoffs this season. The early elimination coupled with MS Dhoni’s comeback to competitive cricket after more than a year made CSK one of the most-talked-about teams in the tournament.

The buzz for the yellow brigade always remains high on social media but this year it was even higher as Dhoni was playing cricket for the first time since announcing his retirement from international cricket on August 15. CSK were the most tweeted about the team in IPL 2020 ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Not just Dhoni but even Indian cricket resumed after a huge gap due to the coronavirus pandemic therefore, it came as no surprise that the opening match of IPL 2020 between MI and CSK remained the most tweeted about the match of the season. Notably, the double Super Over match between MI and KXIP on October 18 stood in third place on the list of most tweeted about matches.

Even though the buzz surrounding Dhoni was immense, it was actually the RCB skipper Virat Kohli who was the most tweeted about player in IPL 2020. Kohli took his team to the playoffs after a four-year gap but couldn’t go the distance yet again this season.

The gravity-defying save on the boundary line by KXIP’s Nicholas Pooran during the game against RR on September 27 topped the list of top-five twitter moments of IPL 2020, ahead of KXIP superstar Chris Gayle’s first match, KXIP captain KL Rahul’s record score of 132 not out, RCB fast bowler Mohammad Siraj’s career-best spell in which he scalped 3 wickets including a record 2 maidens and Dinesh Karthik stepping down as KKR skipper only to hand it over to Eoin Morgan completes the list.

Sachin Tendulkar’s tweet appreciating Pooran’s save was the golden tweet of the season which garnered over 23,000 retweets.

CSK dominated the hashtags as well with 3 of the top-five hashtags belonging to Dhoni’s side. #IPL2020 was the most tweeted hashtag which was followed by #Whistelpody, #CSK, #Yellove, and #Playbold.
