Virat Kohli has built his legacy on aggression, hunger, and an unshakable mindset—and a recent anecdote from his early days in Delhi cricket perfectly captures the fire that defined his journey. Long before he became one of the modern greats, Kohli’s mental toughness was already setting him apart in age-group cricket.

A former Delhi teammate recently recalled an incident from Kohli’s Under-17 days during the Vijay Merchant Trophy, where the young batter had already established himself as a prolific run-scorer. Coming off a previous season that included a double century and multiple hundreds, Kohli was a known name in the Delhi circuit. However, despite his performances, he reportedly faced a lack of support from a coach who seemed unconvinced by his potential.

Instead of letting that affect him, Kohli responded in the only way he knows—by dominating on the field. Ahead of a crucial match against Punjab in Patiala, the odds were stacked against Delhi, with a strong bowling attack led by Siddarth Kaul posing a serious challenge. Recalling the build-up, his teammate said, “Virat was always someone who, if you gave him a challenge, he would love it.”

In a candid pre-match conversation, Virat Kohli made his intent crystal clear. “I will beat the living hell out of these people,” he reportedly said, reflecting his trademark Delhi swagger and confidence.

What followed was vintage Kohli—even at that age. He went on to smash a double century in that very match, silencing critics and reinforcing his reputation as a big-match player.

His teammate further added, “That season, he scored another double century along with three more hundreds, and Delhi went on to win the Vijay Merchant Trophy.”

The campaign included a standout 227-run knock, underlining the consistency and hunger that would later define his international career. It was a glimpse of the mindset that eventually led Kohli to captain India national under-19 cricket team to World Cup glory in 2008.

Fast forward to the present, Kohli is gearing up for yet another season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League 2026. Already the leading run-scorer in IPL history with 8661 runs, he is on the verge of yet another milestone. A tally of just 339 more runs will see him become the first player to cross the historic 9000-run mark in the league—another testament to his enduring greatness.
