Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli delivered a nostalgic moment in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) as he recreated a stunning on-drive reminiscent of his iconic 2018 Perth Test performance. The elegant shot came against Australian captain Pat Cummins during Day 3 of the opening Test on Sunday, November 24, leaving fans and commentators in awe.
Kohli has faced criticism for a string of underwhelming performances in Test cricket, and the pressure was evident after he managed only 5 runs off 12 balls in the first innings. Dismissed by Pat Cummins with a sharp delivery nicked to Usman Khawaja at first slip, Kohli’s struggles seemed to persist.
However, the 36-year-old bounced back in the second innings, walking in with India at 275/2 after Devdutt Padikkal’s dismissal on the first ball of the post-lunch session. Looking composed and authoritative, Kohli brought the crowd to its feet with a vintage straight drive off Cummins in the 93rd over.

Earlier in the day, India resumed at 172/0, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul continuing their record-breaking partnership—the highest by Indian openers in Australia. Jaiswal converted his overnight score into a magnificent 161 off 297 balls, marking his fourth Test century, while Rahul fell for 77. Despite their efforts, the Australian bowlers struck back in the second session. Devdutt Padikkal departed for 25, and key batters Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel contributed only a single run each.

By tea, India stood at 359/5, with Kohli (40*) and Washington Sundar (14*) looking to consolidate. With five wickets in hand, the visitors will aim to stretch their lead in the final session and put Australia under pressure on a pitch showing signs of wear. A strong finish could seal India’s dominance in the opening Test.
