During the third Test of India’s tour of Australia in 2003/04 at Melbourne, Virender Sehwag had hit his fifth Test hundred, his the career-best, 195 (233), with the help of 25 fours and five sixes. Despite Sehwag’s gigantic effort, India ended up on the losing side.
Having won the second Test at Adelaide by 4 wickets, the then Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, had won the toss and chose to bat during the Boxing Day Test.
At the beginning of the game, Indian openers Aakash Chopra and Virender Sehwag carried on their confidence with a brilliant 141-run partnership. While Chopra was dismissed for 48 runs, Sehwag carried that innings in his style. the right-handed batsman Shewag completed his fifth Test century in 144 balls and soon he crossed his previous best Test knock 147.
After reaching 150 in 200 balls, Sehwag became brutal against the Aussie bowlers. Meanwhile, Sehwag had another brilliant 137-run partnership for the second wicket with Rahul Dravid, who was dismissed on 49 runs.
Batting at 195 runs on the day one afternoon, Sehwag was caught out at long on by Nathan Bracken after he didn’t make the proper connection on Simon Katich’s full toss delivery.
In spite of Sehwag’s efforts and two brilliant century partnerships, India were bundled out on 366 in 103 overs. No other batsmen crossed the 50-run mark. After Sehwag was dismissed, Indian batting faced a huge collapse as they were bundled out for 366 runs while once they were batting on 311/3.
What went against India predominantly was the 234-run partnership between Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting. Hayden had scored his 17th Test hundred, 136 (173), with the help of 17 fours and a six. On the other hand, Ponting went on to score his 20th Test hundred, 257 (458), with the help of 25 fours.
With India getting bundled out on 286 in the second innings, Australia required 95 runs to level the series, which they did with nine wickets to spare.
