After Mike Hesson has just replaced Brad Hodge as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for the next IPL season (IPL 2019), Virender Sehwag has also ended his journey with the team, who was serving as a mentor of the team.

In 2014, former Indian opening batsman Sehwag joined KXIP as a player. From 2016, he served as a mentor of the team after putting an end on his IPL career as a player.

On Saturday evening, Sehwag revealed this news on his official Twitter account by posting, “All good things must come to an end and I’ve had a wonderful time at Kings 11 Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead.”

In 2014, Sehwag joined the franchise after finishing his six-season long journey with Delhi Daredevils. KXIP reached the IPL final in that season but lost against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final, while Sehwag scored 455 runs in that tournament with the average of 26.76. Meanwhile, KXIP also reached the semi-final of 2014 Champions League T20.

However, in the next IPL season, KXIP had a dull performance and Sehwag also failed to play on his potential. In IPL 2015, KXIP finished at the last position (eighth) in the points table while Sehwag scored only 99 runs with the average of 12.37.

Since IPL 2016, Sehwag was the mentor of the team where KXIP finished at the last position (eighth), fifth position and seventh position respectively in the last three seasons.

Just a few days earlier, Brad Hodge has been sacked as the head coach of the team, who had a three-season contract from IPL 2018. Mike Hesson has joined as a replacement of Hodge for the head coach role. In this June, Hesson resigned from the head coach role of New Zealand cricket team.
