Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag paid a heartfelt tribute to Rohit Sharma after the latter announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7 via an Instagram story. The announcement came amid growing speculation over Rohit’s future in the longest format, especially with the England tour around the corner. While Rohit had initially shown interest in being part of the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series, it appears he decided to step away a few weeks before the selection discussions began.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag reflected on the possible reasons behind Rohit’s decision. He suggested that the selectors might have communicated their intentions privately to Rohit, either about removing him as Test captain or not including him in the squad altogether.
“I think the selectors may have talked with him and laid out the possible options. Perhaps that’s when Rohit decided to make the call on his own terms—before any official announcement came from the board,” Virender Sehwag explained.

Sehwag lauded the Mumbai batsman for his illustrious career and the joy he brought to fans. “Rohit Sharma was the kind of player you tuned in to watch. Whether it was Tests, ODIs or T20s, he always entertained. His records speak volumes of his quality.”

Although Sehwag admitted that Rohit had the talent and fitness to play 100 Test matches, he also emphasized that there should be no regrets.
“He’s had a brilliant journey—from starting in the middle order to cementing his place as a world-class opener. It’s been a phenomenal transformation.” Expressing gratitude, Sehwag added, “Thank you, Rohit, for your contributions to Indian cricket. You’ve given fans countless moments to cherish. All the best for the next chapter of your life.”
