West Indies cricket legend Sir Viv Richards has voiced his concern over the public disagreement between head coach Daren Sammy and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, saying the issue should have been handled privately rather than becoming a talking point in the media. The controversy began after Joseph opted out of the ongoing Test series against Pakistan for personal reasons. When Cricket West Indies announced the squad on July 23, the board cited personal reasons for the pacer’s absence.

However, a day later, Sammy revealed in a press conference that Joseph had declined selection, a statement that later drew criticism from the fast bowler. Joseph subsequently clarified that his decision was linked to workload management after returning from a lengthy injury layoff and not because he was unwilling to represent the West Indies. He also suggested that Sammy’s comments created a misleading narrative about his commitment to the national team.

Reacting to the episode, Viv Richards said there are always two sides to every story and felt the coach’s public remarks were unnecessary. Speaking to The Indian Express, the legendary batter said he believes Joseph would have explained his situation professionally, making a public disclosure avoidable.

“I would like to think that Alzarri made it clear exactly how he felt. There are two sides to the story. To say he refused selection is pushing it in a very big way. I’d like to think Alzarri handled it professionally, so the statement from coach Sammy wasn’t really necessary,” Viv Richards said.

The former West Indies captain also warned that public comments of this nature can have lasting consequences on a player’s reputation and professional career. He admitted he was surprised by the disagreement, considering Sammy and Joseph had previously enjoyed a strong relationship during their time together with the St Lucia franchise.

Richards stressed that rebuilding trust should now be the priority. He believes misunderstandings can happen in professional sport, but honest communication and mutual respect are essential to repairing relationships.

“This sometimes hampers players’ professional careers if such statements are not entirely accurate. Their relationship goes much deeper than what we hear publicly, and it’s important to rekindle that bond. We all make mistakes, but if there is understanding and goodwill, things can always be put back together,” Viv Richards added.

Joseph also defended his stance, saying he had spoken with both Sammy and Cricket West Indies before the squad announcement. He pointed out that the board’s official statement mentioned only “personal reasons” and argued that the coach’s subsequent remarks changed public perception.

“We had a conversation, and Cricket West Indies clearly stated it was for personal reasons. Mr Sammy knows exactly what that statement would have done and the narrative it would have created. I have nothing further to add regarding his comments,” Alzarri Joseph said.

The episode has sparked widespread discussion across the cricketing fraternity, with many former players urging both Joseph and Sammy to resolve their differences privately. With the West Indies set to face a demanding international schedule in the coming months, restoring harmony within the dressing room will be crucial for the team’s success.
