Former Indian Test specialist cricketer VVS Laxman is not happy with the shot selections of the Indian cricketers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the ongoing first Test of the five-match Test series between the hosts England and the visitors India at Edgbaston (Birmingham).

On Thursday, day 2 of the ongoing first Test, Indian cricket team mostly performed the disaster batting, except the skipper Virat Kohli who scored a remarkable 149 runs to save the Indian team.

After bowling out the hosts for 287 runs, Indian openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan provided a good start as they put a 50-run partnership. But then the Indian batsmen lost their wickets in regular intervals. Apart from Kohli, none of the Indian batsmen reached the 30-run mark as India was bundled out for 274 runs and trail by 13 runs at the end of that innings.

Laxman feels very disappointed with the Indian batsmen’s shot selection, especially the Indian opener Dhawan and no.3 batsman Rahul. Rahul joined the crease after Vijay (20) was trapped lbw by the young English pacer Sam Curran, but was dismissed in the same over with a poor shot selection.

After hitting a four in the first ball, Rahul poked an outside the off-stump delivery by Sam Curran that got an inside edge and travelled to the stump to break it.

In the next over, Dhawan (26) departed with another poor shot while Sam Curran added another wicket in his tally. This time the ball was swinging away from the off-stump while Dhawan played that with the slightly opened bat face and the ball carried safely to the second slip Dawid Malan who made no mistake to grab that.

Unhappy Laxman said on the batting performances, “The foundation which was laid didn’t capitalize, as an opening batsman in England or otherwise playing with the new ball is the toughest once they did that they had to capitalize and make it count. But unfortunately, they lost their wickets and will be really disappointed with the shot selection especially KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan.”
