Former Indian batter VVS Laxman could be in line for a significantly larger role in Indian cricket, with the BCCI reportedly considering appointing him as Director of Cricket. The potential move comes as the board prepares for a possible reshuffle of key positions in September. According to reports, Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the senior selection committee is due to end in September, while India’s coaching and cricketing structure could also undergo changes.
Sources have indicated that Laxman is among the leading candidates for a wider administrative and cricket operations role. There have also been reports suggesting that the BCCI could extend Agarkar’s tenure until June 2027. However, the board has not officially confirmed either the proposed extension or Laxman’s potential appointment as Director of Cricket.
Such a move would significantly expand Laxman’s current responsibilities as the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. He has been closely involved in player development, high-performance programmes and India’s broader talent pathway since taking charge of the revamped facility.

Laxman has also maintained a strong connection with the senior national team. He has stepped in as interim head coach on several occasions when the regular coaching staff was unavailable. Most recently, he guided a young India side to a 3-0 T20I series victory in Zimbabwe while Gautam Gambhir and his support staff were rested following the England tour.
If the BCCI creates the Director of Cricket position, Laxman could potentially become a key link between India’s senior team, selectors, coaches, the Centre of Excellence and the various stages of the player development system. The role could also involve greater responsibility for talent identification, long-term player development, high-performance planning and ensuring continuity across India’s cricketing structure. These areas would build naturally on the work Laxman has already carried out at the CoE.

The timing of the proposed change is particularly significant. With Agarkar’s tenure approaching its reported end, the BCCI’s selection structure could come under increased focus ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. India’s recent performances and the wider coaching setup have also generated scrutiny.
Laxman’s successful interim stint in Zimbabwe has added another dimension to discussions about his future within Indian cricket. However, the former batter has previously indicated that his primary focus remains his responsibilities at the Centre of Excellence.

Laxman took charge of the revamped CoE after choosing to continue in that role rather than replace Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach in 2024. If finalised, the Director of Cricket position would represent a major expansion of Laxman’s influence, moving him from leading one important department to potentially coordinating several of the most crucial areas of Indian cricket.
