Waqar Younis, former Pakistan captain, offered some crucial advice to struggling pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi amidst his lackluster performances in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. In three matches so far, Shaheen has managed only four wickets while conceding 139 runs at a troubling economy rate of 6.31. Younis expressed concerns about Shaheen’s loss of discipline during the tournament, emphasizing his over-eagerness to take wickets.

“I don’t know if there is a problem with his fitness. The missing link in his bowling is discipline, and he is over trying to get wickets. When you do the same thing again and again like Shaheen is bowling to get his yorker going, then batsmen know that, and they are ready for it,” Waqar Younis commented.

To illustrate his point, Younis referenced India’s ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered an exceptional performance against Pakistan in Ahmedabad. Bumrah, who took two crucial wickets in that match, has been a standout performer in the World Cup.

“Bumrah is creating pressure and his line is top of the off stump. He bowled so well against Pakistan and created pressure to get wickets,” added Waqar Younis.

The former cricketer also considered the impact of Shaheen’s regular new-ball partner, Naseem Shah, who was absent due to injury. He emphasized that Pakistan’s issues couldn’t be solely attributed to the absence of one bowler.

“Naseem is a good bowler and doesn’t give many runs away. When Naseem creates pressure, batsmen take chances with other bowlers, and they get wickets. I don’t think it’s because of missing just one bowler, but it’s because they are not keeping it simple,” Waqar Younis concluded.

This advice from the legendary former cricketer could prove valuable to Shaheen Shah Afridi as Pakistan seeks to regain their form and momentum in the tournament.
