In early October 2017, Washington Sundar failed the Yo-Yo test and the international call-up became far more distant for him. He was about to be picked for T20I series against Australia, but a fitness halted his journey.
Washington was frustrated, but stayed strong in mind. He worked hard on his fitness after that and gave a phenomenal performance in the Ranji Trophy and then returned to clear the Yo-Yo test. His hard work paid some rich dividends as got his maiden call-up for the T20I series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
During an interview with The Hindu, Sundar said, “It is a dream come true for me. Not many teenagers get an opportunity to play for the country and I consider myself fortunate. Every practice session I attended was with the aim of playing for India some day.”
He further added, “The fact that I missed out playing against a team like Australia hurt me, but I willed my way through that period. It was difficult but I did not lose belief.”
Washington can play a crucial role in the Indian squad as he is pretty accurate with his off-spin and his ability to bat at any position gives an added advantage. During the IPL 2017, he was picked as a replacement for the injured star all-rounder R Ashwin in the Pune Supergiant.
Washington grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The lanky spinner also recalled the iconic M.S. Dhoni’s guidance in the Pune squad. He said, “I could walk up to him for his advice even during his off hours. He would gladly share his thoughts with me, sort out my problems, give me valuable suggestions. Behind the stumps, he would always encourage me. I am so happy I am joining the Indian squad when he is in the team.”
For Washington, playing alongside Dhoni would be a “dream within a dream.”
