Washington Sundar once again reminded everyone why he’s one of India’s most valuable all-rounders, delivering a game-changing performance in the third T20I against Australia in Hobart. His unbeaten 49 off just 23 balls helped India chase down 187 with five wickets in hand and nine balls to spare, levelling the five-match series 1-1. The 26-year-old’s calm composure under pressure and clarity of thought stood out as India continued their strong run in the format.

Speaking after the match, Washington Sundar opened up about his mindset as a bowling all-rounder and how he balances expectations from both bat and ball.

“I just try to wait for my opportunities. One thing I never want to do is chase results,” Washington Sundar told India Today. “Whenever an opportunity comes, I focus on what the situation and conditions demand, and play to my strengths. That way, I’m clearer in my mind and can truly enjoy the game.”

He further explained that focusing on team success over personal milestones is what brings him true satisfaction. “If I start thinking that I have to perform with the bat because I haven’t done much with the ball, it takes away the joy. As long as I follow my process and do what’s right for the team, that’s where the real satisfaction lies,” he added.

When asked about his mindset during the chase, Washington Sundar revealed that staying in the moment was key.

“I was mentally prepared for my chance to bat. I didn’t overthink — just watched the ball closely and reacted. God was kind today,” he said with a smile. “It’s always a great honour to represent India. Every time I wear this jersey, I remind myself to stay ready for whatever role comes my way.”

While Arshdeep Singh earned the Player of the Match award for his impressive 3/35, Sundar’s fearless hitting drew praise from fans and experts alike. His powerful stroke play, particularly against the Australian pacers, showcased the depth in India’s middle order.

With two matches left — in Carrara (November 6) and Brisbane (November 8) — Suryakumar Yadav’s men will look to build on this momentum. And if Washington Sundar’s form is anything to go by, India’s balance and belief heading into the remaining T20Is look stronger than ever.
