All-rounder Washington Sundar has hailed the camaraderie and youthful spirit of the Indian side that recently toured England for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. The 25-year-old, who emerged as one of India’s most reliable performers in the series, described the dressing room atmosphere as “fabulous,” emphasising how every player embraced responsibility with full commitment.

Sundar highlighted that the team entered the series fully aware of the challenges, particularly with legends like Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Rohit Sharma no longer around. With Shubman Gill leading a relatively inexperienced squad, every cricketer had to step up.

“Coming into the series, we knew that each one of us would have to rise in difficult situations. Looking back now, that’s exactly what happened. Several players turned pressure moments into match-winning ones,” Washington Sundar told Wisden.

The Tamil Nadu all-rounder shone brightly with both bat and ball. He scored 284 runs in four Tests, including his maiden Test century and a crucial half-century. His aggressive 53 off just 46 balls at The Oval gave India a competitive edge in the third innings of the decider. With the ball, Sundar chipped in with seven wickets, his best figures being four in an innings, showcasing his growing maturity as a genuine all-rounder.

Reflecting on the campaign, Washington Sundar said the bond within the squad was unique. “Truly, the way the dressing room environment was built—it was fabulous. Because we’re all so young, there’s an energy that drives us forward. We enjoyed each other’s success and supported one another, both on and off the field.”

India’s youthful side showed resilience after a heavy defeat at Headingley and a narrow heartbreak at Lord’s, eventually drawing the series 2-2. While they couldn’t clinch the trophy, the unity and fearlessness they displayed were hailed as positives for the future.

For Sundar personally, this tour has been career-defining. His contributions with bat and ball not only strengthened his position in the Test setup but also suggested he could evolve into a long-term replacement for Ashwin. For a team in transition, his emergence as a dependable all-rounder is perhaps the biggest takeaway from the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
