India and Bangladesh are currently facing each other in the first semi-final of the men’s cricket event in the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. India won the toss and elected to bowl first. Bangladesh got off to a poor start, losing three wickets in the Powerplay. Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore picked up the first wicket in the fifth over, dismissing Mahmudul Hasan Joy.

Washington Sundar followed this up with an excellent last over of the Powerplay, picking up two wickets and giving away just one run. Saif Hassan, the captain of Bangladesh, tried to sweep a ball away but found Rinku Singh at deep backward square leg.

A couple of balls later, Sundar got his second wicket in the over, when he bowled a widish delivery, to entice Zakir Hasan into throwing his bat at it, and finding the outside edge that was caught well by a leaping Yashasvi Jaiswal at first slip. Bangladesh ended the Powerplay at 21/3.

India went on to bowl 16 overs of spin, with the likes of Ravi Bishnoi, Sai Kishore, Sundar, and debutant Shahbaz Ahmed choking the Bangladeshi batters with their tight lines and lengths. Saif and Co. eventually finished their innings at a disappointing 96/9 in the 20 overs. Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with impeccable figures of 3/12 in his four overs.

Washington Sundar couldn’t add to his couple of wickets, while the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma, Bishnoi, and Shahbaz picked up one wicket apiece. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played a brilliant knock of 100 off 49 balls in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Games against Nepal, was dismissed in the first over of the second innings by Ripon Mondol.

However, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma joined forces and helped India recover after Yashasvi’s dismissal. They added 68 runs inside the Powerplay to take the ‘Men in Blue’ to a position of strength.
