Wasim Jaffer, Amol Mazumdar among others in Mumbai head coach race

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has applied for the head coach role of Mumbai along with other stalwarts of the game like Amol Mazumdar and former leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule. They all have applied after Ramesh Powar has left the position after being appointed as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team earlier this month.

However, so far 9 people have applied for the post of Mumbai head coach before the deadline of May 24 as well. Last week the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had asked for applications where the eligibility criteria were mentioned of a minimum of playing 50 first-class matches as well.

Meanwhile, former India pace bowler Balwinder Singh Sandhu, who was a member of the 1983 World Cup Winning India team, has also applied for the head coach post. Apart from others who also have applied for the post are former wicketkeeper-batsman Sulkashan Kulkarni, pace bowler Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan as well.

Wasim Jaffer, however, is the most experienced among all the candidates who had already played 31 Tests. He had already worked with the Punjab Kings side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Muzumdar, who was a former Mumbai captain and under whom they won the prestigious Ranji Trophy, has been a batting coach with the NCA, IPL team Rajasthan Royals as well as a consultant when the South Africa team had played against India in 2019.

It is also noteworthy that, last season, Mumbai had initially appointed Amit Pagnis as the coach for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but after having a poor show, Pagnis had stepped down. Mumbai Cricket Association has turned to Ramesh Powar before the Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament and the former player did exceptionally well, helping the team win the coveted earlier this year as well before leaving the post for being appointed the head coach for the Indian women’s team for the second time as well.
