Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has backed Vaibhav Suryavanshi to continue playing his natural attacking game after the teenage sensation smashed a breathtaking maiden T20I half-century against Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-game series. The 15-year-old announced himself on the international stage with a fearless innings that reminded many of Virender Sehwag’s trademark approach. Suryavanshi had endured a difficult start to his international career during India’s T20I series in England, where he managed only modest scores across three innings.

However, he bounced back in style in Harare, blasting a sensational 50 off just 19 deliveries. His explosive knock, featuring four boundaries and four sixes, came at a staggering strike rate of 263.16 and laid the foundation for India’s comfortable victory. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Wasim Jaffer praised the youngster for refusing to abandon his aggressive mindset despite the early setbacks. Drawing comparisons with former India opener Virender Sehwag, Jaffer said players with naturally attacking instincts must continue trusting their strengths even during lean patches.

“You do doubt yourself when you don’t score runs, but you should always back your game. Viru (Sehwag) used to do exactly that, and I believe Vaibhav should continue with the same fearless approach regardless of his form. When he is batting well, he is obviously dangerous, but even when the runs aren’t coming, he should trust the method that has brought him success. That’s one of the most impressive things about him,” Wasim Jaffer explained.

The former India opener admitted he was not surprised by Suryavanshi’s explosive innings. According to Jaffer, the knock was only a matter of time, and getting a big score early in an international career removes unnecessary pressure from a young player.

“I expected something like this from Vaibhav. It was actually surprising that he couldn’t make an impact in England. This innings will give him tremendous confidence. Once you get that first big score, the pressure eases and the constant questions disappear. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, and we get to see consistent performances from him going forward,” he added.

While Suryavanshi has already established himself as one of India’s most exciting T20 prospects, Jaffer believes the teenager’s biggest examination will come in the longer formats of the game. The former opener stressed that he has no doubts about Suryavanshi’s talent but feels adapting to 50-over cricket and first-class cricket will present a different challenge altogether. Building longer innings, negotiating the new ball, and adjusting his tempo will be key areas to watch.

“I think it will be slightly challenging for him. He performed well on the Emerging tour and at the Under-19 World Cup, so questioning his ability would be unfair. But batting through the first ten overs in one-day cricket will be a different challenge. It’ll be interesting to watch how he approaches the Vijay Hazare Trophy and whether he can adapt after the initial phase. The Ranji Trophy will also be a great test of his temperament and technique,” Wasim Jaffer said.

However, Jaffer also pointed out that Suryavanshi displayed encouraging signs of maturity during IPL 2026. He recalled how the youngster adjusted his batting when early wickets fell, proving that he is capable of pacing an innings rather than relying solely on aggressive stroke play.

“He already showed adaptability in the IPL. There were occasions when early wickets fell, and he batted with more responsibility before accelerating later. That tells you he has the cricketing intelligence to succeed across formats. Bihar’s promotion to the Elite Group means he will face stronger domestic attacks this season, making it an exciting phase in his development,” Wasim Jaffer concluded.
